As with the study of any natural phenomenon, bringing mediumship into the

regulated environment of the laboratory allows for the controlled and repeated examination of anomalous information reception by mediums. It also lends statistically analyzed support to the survival of consciousness hypothesis and addresses the relationship between consciousness and brain. There was an Indian Chief who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the Winter, the second in the Spring, the third in Summer, and the youngest son in the Fall. When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said no, it was covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.

The Chief then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree’s life.
He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it’s Winter, you will miss the promise of Spring, the beauty of Summer, and the fulfillment of Fall.

Moral of the story:
Don’t let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don’t judge life by one difficult season. Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn’t hear the band – he could see it. In his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can’t buy. ‘Today is a gift, that’s why it is called the present.’

Spirits, because their envelope (perispirit) is only semi-material, exist in a series of dimensions different from the physical world we interact with in our daily lives. In Spiritism our world is commonly called the ‘material world’ and the dimensions inhabited by Spirits are collectively called ‘the spiritual world’. It is important to understand that the spiritual and material worlds do not exist separately, like different planets in a solar system. Instead, they exist simultaneously occupying the same space in the universe.

Science tells us that our senses are only capable of being aware of a tiny part of the world around us. Even with the most advanced instruments we can only get tiny controlled glimpses of the microscopic and macroscopic universe that we are a part of. It is because of the limitations of our senses that we do not perceive the other dimensions that exist simultaneously as part of our world. Of course this does not mean that we do not posses at least the possibility of becoming aware of these other dimensions. In fact we each possess a ‘6th sense’ that can, once developed, do just that.

Each dimension in the spiritual world corresponds to the level of evolution of the Spirits that inhabit it:

Lower Dimensions or Lower Zones

It is important to first note that the inhabitants of lower and middle Spirit dimensions use their perispirits to manipulate the dense matter that is found in their dimension. In this way they create environments they are accustomed to on earth. So Spirits in these two categories of dimensions live in cities.

Lower zones dimensions are actually composed of more dense matter than our own physical world. Spirits in these dimensions exist in a state of fear, pain, chaos, ruin and endless darkness. These dimensions are the ones religious dogma has given the name hell. Though the Spirits are not forsaken or condemned, they simply cannot travel to any other higher dimensions because their perispirits are so dense resulting from their lack of evolution. This density means that their perispirits appear like human material bodies that do not age or die.

The darkness comes from the very little luminescence that the Spirits can radiate, another natural limitation of their evolution. The fear, pain and chaos come from the nature of the inhabitants. Spirits who on earth enjoyed violence, torment, cruelty and impulsiveness without remorse return to their lower spheres and continue these endless cycles of obsession.

The ruin comes from the fact that anything formed within a dimension using dense matter can only be maintained by vigilance and cooperation. Two things rarely found among such ignorant individuals.

Middle Dimensions

Middle dimensions are composed of matter less dense than our material world. The enviorment in these dimensions is closer to the ideals of futuristic human life. Spirits there live in idealistic communities. They perform charitable work in the form of traveling and performing tasks in lower dimensions. Spirits also continue their intellectual and ethical evolution through the teachings of more advanced spirits.

Middle dimensions possess one unique hindrance not found in lower zones, higher dimensions or our Earthly dimension, instability. Many middle dimensions are on the edges of Lower dimensions, serving as places of rest, recuperation and learning for Spirits in lower zones who have finally progressed to a higher level. According to Spirit teachers, constant vigilance to maintain these energy barriers between the very dense and less dense dimensions is required.

It is Spirits of middle dimensions that are that most often surrounding developing mediums. These spirit friends, councel, protect and help these mediums during the long and trial filled process of development and during the equally difficult but imensely satisfying stage when the medium begins regularly using their ability.

Higher Dimensions

The highest dimensions are the least dense. Spirits progressing to those completely lack the animalistic density found in all other dimensions. Spirits in these dimensions no longer need to reincarnate because they have achieved a level of intellectual and ethical evolution where it is no longer a necessity. These Spirits spend their time in constant charitable work, as Spirit governors of developing worlds, as the engineers of vast building projects for God or as Spirit masters working through mediums, with spirits of middle dimensions as go-betweens. As for a more detailed explanation of the appearance of these dimensions, the Spirit teachers have volunteered little, most probably because of the limitations of human language in expressing this information accurately.

Our Earthly Material Dimension From the Spirit Point of View

Our material world, as you can read on this section of the guide, is very unique and distinct from all the Spirit dimensions. We exist as human extensions of Spirit beings, and our world is one of trial, learning and atonements of past mistakes.

Our world is an estimated 4.5 billion years old, yet only recently , 6,000 years ago, saw Humans evolve to what we are today. Of our 6,000 years on this earth an understanding of God as our creator and of the basic moral laws that we need to all share occured a very brief 2000 years ago and the discovery of our Spirit reality, the imortality of our soul, and a profoundly deeper understanding of God’s laws became a reality only 110 years ago.

We are the dominating animal on this planet but have yet to evolve beyond war, greed, cruelty, poverty, the destruction of our home planet and slow self-destruction. One would think that we are lost, forsaken children with little hope for long-term survival as a species. In fact our Earthly dimension is one of daily progress too, both in our intellectual growth (through science) and our ethical growth. The last is happening through religion, social progress, the new search for Spirituality so many people have embarked on and with the slowly growing worldwide belief in Spiritism.

Eventually our material earthly life will evolve and dramatically change. The spiritual ideals of middle dimensions will become a reflection of our earthly lives. Human society will change, focusing on the continued ethical progression of its inhabitance and leaving behind the materialistic driving forces of our world today. One day all diseases will have cures, there will be no poverty, no violence, people will live to very old age, most people will be active mediums, and there will be a worldwide collaboration between the Spiritual world and our material physical world.

This earthly progress is certainly far away, but the same divine laws that assure the progress of all beings also assure the progress of all worlds in the material dimension. So that beautiful future is not a remote possibility but an assured fact. It is simply a matter of how long it will take for us to go down that path.

“Spirits are not, as many think, abstract, vague, indefinite beings, nor are they anything like a luminosity or a spark. Quite to the contrary, they are very real beings, with clear identities and shapes.” – Kardec (“Spiritism Easily Explained”)

As Allan Kardec said, an erroneous idea still prevails about Spirits, in which they are believed to be vague and indefinite beings. In truth, however, they are beings similar to ourselves. They do not even constitute a distinct creation or population, for in fact, we (humans) are all spirits, only we are presently incarnated in material bodies as part of the process of reincarnation. Those spirits referred to as “spirits of the dead” “spirits of the invisible world”, even “ghosts” are only spirits or souls that were once incarnated in a human body and are, at the time of reference, free from the earthly flesh.

Here we will look at what the basic principles of Spiritism teach about Spirits.

DEFINITION

Spirit, as it is referred to in our web’s section on Science (as one of the three aspects of Spiritism), is defined as the intelligent principle of the universe (matter being the other major element). In this section here, however, we are referring to individual Spirits, as defined in the Spirits’ Book, as “the intelligent beings of creation.” These intelligent beings, then, are the individualization of that intelligent principle, and they populate the invisible realms of the universe.

ORIGIN

The exact, intimate nature and origin of Spirits is still unknown to us. Even the intelligent Spirits that communicate to us are unable to explain it, either from their own ignorance, or for the lack of ability of our language to express it. What we do know is that they are a creation of God, that God has existed and created from all eternity, that the creation of Spirits is ongoing, and that the existence of Spirits has no end (“Spirits Book”, questions 78-80; 83). The Spirits tell us (question 155) that each Spirit is created in an equal state of simplicity and unawareness, whereby it’s mission is of “self-enlightenment and gradual achievement of perfection through the pursuit of knowledge and truth”, acquired through the experiences of trials and atonements throughout multiple [material] existences.

PHYSICAL NATURE

The Spirits clothed in physical bodies constitute living human beings, or the visible corporeal/material world, and are referred to as incarnate Spirits. Freed from those bodies, they inhabit the spiritual or invisible world, and are referred to as discarnate Spirits. In understanding what Spirits are and how they operate, in both the material and spiritual worlds, it is important to understand that the spirit has a semi-material envelope called the perispirit. To explain this concept, here is an excerpt from Allan Kardec’s book, “What is Spiritism”:

When the soul is united to the body during life, it has a double covering. One is heavy, gross and destructible-the material body. The other is fluid, light , and indestructible-the perispirit [Editor's note: This perispirit accompanies the soul even when freed from the material body].

There are, then, three essential elements in man:
1) the soul or Spirit- the intelligent principle in which thought, will and the moral sense reside;
2) the body- the material covering that establishes the Spirit’s relationship with the exterior world; and
3) the perispirit- a fluidic envelope, light and imponderable which serves as a bond and link between the Spirit and the body.

When the material body is worn out and can no longer function, the Spirit abandons it just as the tree sheds its bark and the snake its skin. In short, it abandons the body as one would a garment that is no longer useful. This is what we call death. Death comes only to the bodily covering abandoned by the soul. The soul retains its fluidic body or perispirit.

Bodily death frees the Spirit from the bond that confined it to the earth and caused it to suffer. Once freed of that burden, but still retaining the ethereal body, the Spirit is able to travel through space with the speed of thought.

The soul, perispirit, and material body together constitute man; the soul and perispirit, separated from the body constitute the Spirit.

Note: The soul is thus one single entity, while the Spirit is a double entity and man a triple entity. It would be more exact to use the word soul to designate the intelligent principle and the term Spirit to designate the semi-material being formed from the union of that principle with the fluidic body. But because the intelligent principle cannot be conceived separated from the material, and the perispirit cannot be conceived without the animation of the intelligent principle, the words soul and Spirit are used interchangeably.

Question 88 of “The Spirit’s Book” asks “Are Spirits immaterial?” The Spirits answered, “Human language has no exact words to describe the essence of Spirit, as a person who is born blind has no conception of how to define light. Immaterial is not quite the term; incorporeal would be a better word. After all, once a spirit is created, it must be “something,” but your senses can’t grasp the essence of spirit any more than your language can satisfactorily define it.” So, while we say that the Spirit’s fluidic envelope or body, the perispirit, is semi-material, we say that the actual Spirit or soul itself is incorporeal. When we call the latter immaterial, it is, as Kardec noted, “because their essence differs from everything we know under the name of matter” and that “we can only define them by means of comparisons that are imperfect, that is to say, by an effort of the imagination.

What about the Spirit’s form? Question 88 of “The Spirit’s Book” asks, “Do spirits have a well-defined and consistent form?” The Spirits answered, “Not for human eyes. You imagine them only vaguely as a flame, a gleam, an ethereal spark. But for us they have a form.” When asked if that flame or spark is of any color”, they replied, “If you could see it, it would appear to you to vary from dull gray to a perfect brilliance, according to the degree of the spirit’s purity.”

When discarnate spirits or human mediums are able to see spirits, the form that they are seeing is that of the perispirit. The perispirit assumes the definite form that the spirit wishes to give it, which is why we see spirits in human form, and most generally in a form that mirrors the physical body of their most recent incarnation.

PERISPIRT

As we said previously, the perispirit is crucial in understanding the nature and operation of the Spirit. It has many important functions in the spirits interaction with the spiritual and material worlds, as well as its own evolution. We have dedicated a separate subsection to this topic. Scientists are beginning to prove more and more convincingly that thoughts are POWERFUL things.

In November 2006, on a special edition of CNN’s Larry King Live, Mr. King interviewed a panel of “mind experts” about how our thoughts literally create the events we experience, the material things we possess, and even the health of our bodies. On the show, panel experts Bob Proctor, John Assaraf and others who were featured in the movie ‘The Secret’ explained that recent breakthroughs in neuroscience along with understanding mental laws, reveals why goal setting, the “law of attraction” and “positive thinking” all work, regardless of whether you look at them from a metaphysical or a scientific perspective.

You are already using this force every day, because you cannot turn it off. Whatever you have been thinking about, picturing in your mind repeatedly on a daily basis, and putting emotional energy towards is what you are now experiencing.

Scientists have identified specific parts of the brain, such as the reticular activating system (RAS), which works with the visual parts of our brain to call our conscious attention to those things that have been focused on, and to filter out other things that have not. The RAS is activated by “programming” thoughts, phrases and images into our sub-conscious minds. Our sub conscious mind is the “power center” and THIS is the mechanism that explains why visualization and positive thinking are now being accepted as scientific methods for change.

In the 1970’s, the Soviets and East Germans were the first to formally use structured mental rehearsal. At that time, they dominated in several Olympic sports. Today virtually all elite athletes use visualization extensively, as we now know that the brain cannot differentiate between real practice and practice that is vividly imagined.

OUR BRAINS ARE LIKE COMPUTERS, WAITING FOR A PROGRAM TO BE INSTALLED.

We are discovering that our brain is cybernetic in nature, which means that it is literally like a computer, waiting for a program to be installed. Here’s the kicker – the subconscious is completely neutral and impartial. It will carry out any instructions you give it. Unfortunately, many of us are still running negative programs we picked up from others as children when our non-conscious minds were totally open and impressionable, or which we developed over the years as a result of repetition of our own negative thinking.

As it turns out, our own thoughts, repeated daily, are one of the primary ways that our “mental computer” is programmed on a sub-conscious level, which is the level of beliefs, habits and automatic behavior.

CHOOSING TO FOCUS ON NEW POSITIVE THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND IMAGES WILL LITERALLY CREATE NEW NEURAL PATTERNS IN YOUR BRAIN.

If you are getting more of the same negative results in your life – such as the same health problems, or the same body fat that continues to return even after you lose it, then you have probably been
un-consciously running old negative programs and re-enforcing them with negative thought patterns.

Neuroscientists have discovered that you have the capacity to create an almost infinite number of new neural connections in your brain when you run new thought patterns. Old neural pathways are like grooves in a record, and if you are struggling with your health related behaviors or behaviors in any other area of your life, you have been playing these “old records” over and over again. If you were to carve a new groove into that record, it would never play the same way again. The old pattern would weaken and the new one would take over. Brand new positive thoughts, feelings and images begin to create new neural patterns—new grooves.

Psychologists estimate that it takes 21 to 30 days to establish a new pattern in your brain. During this time, the focus of sticking with your practice and repeating your new thought patterns is critical. This isn’t always easy. In fact, controlling your thinking and keeping it constructive may be one of the most difficult challenges you have ever faced. The healing mediunity does not come to supplant medicine and doctors; it simply comes to prove that there are things that they don’t know and invite to study them; that nature has resources that they ignore; that the spiritual element that they ignore is not a chimera, and that, when they take it into account they will open new horizons to science and will be more successful than now”. ( 1)

There are researches about the effects of the prayer in the health of people. One of them was performed by the Laboratory of Cellular Immunology of the University of Medicine of the University of Brasília, with the active participation of more than fifty-two students of medicine, from 2000 to 2003. The research, as its results published in the major newspapers of the Country, showed positive results which were materialized in the increase of cellular stability in individuals who received prayers.

According to the study under discussion, one of the main defense mechanisms of the organism – the phagocytosis (*) – may have its function stabilized with prayers made at a distance. “In the analysis of the fifty-two volunteers, each week a pair provided blood samples and answered a questionnaire about stress. A picture of the volunteer would be forwarded, identified only by the name, to a group of ten religious people from different creeds, who, for one week, would make prayers for that person. Coordinated by the immunology professor Carlos Eduardo Tosta, the research lasted three years. ( 2)

Prayer works on health individuals, influencing the immune system, according to a pioneer study performed in 1988, in the San Francisco General Hospital, in California. In that hospital it was possible to prove that the patients who received prayers showed significant improvements, needing even smaller amounts of medicines”. ( 3) For us, Spiritualists, it takes special features, for “differently from normal medicine, created by Science, magnetism tells us about the power of the fluid action and Spiritualism reveals another powerful force in the healing mediunity and the influence of prayer ” (4) Allan Kardec, when making his remarks about question 662 of The Book of the Spirits, states that “thought and will represent a great action power in us, which goes much beyond the limits of our corporeal realm “.(5) In fact “electricity is dynamic energy; magnetism is static energy; thought is electromagnetic power “(6) .Considering the property of the magnetic flow for us to be mutually influenced, and “recognizing the capacity of the magnetic fluid for creatures to be reciprocally influenced, with much greater amplitude and effectiveness will it operate on the cellular entities of the Organic State – specially the blood and hystiocitary ones -, determining their satisfactory level, migration or extreme mobility, the production of antibodies or even the improvising of other fighting and immunological resources, in the defense against bacterial invasions and in the reduction or extension of pathogenic processes (…)”(7)

A lot has been said about the prayer, but very little is known about its operating mechanism. That’s why we value it little, and sometimes even forget it. It is probably an understandable procedure, since Spiritism is a relatively new Doctrine, approximately 150 years old, and the analysis of its scientific aspects demand basic knowledge, without which we would not understand its explanations, we would then need to have notions of physics, sciences, biology, fluids, magnetism, electromagnetism, electricity, telecommunications, etc. But one thing is certain, prayer cannot change the nature of the trials through which man has to pass, or even change his course, and that is why they are in the hands of God and there are those which have to be endured until the end, but God always takes resignation into account.

Often come those who challenge the effectiveness of the prayer, alleging that since God knows the human needs, it is not necessary to pray, for if the Universe is ruled by wise and eternal laws, supplications will never be able to alter the Creator’s purposes. However, one should not forget the Master’s assertion that “whatever you ask in prayer, have faith that you will obtain, and it will be granted to you.” (8)

Although the prayers we make will not deflect our problems and delusions, they will be a comforting balm for our sour soul, for they make us enter in states of peace and enjoyment which only those who pray can decipher. Prayer has then the ineffable gift of giving us strength to stand internal and external fights and problems, of putting us in a position where we can surpass the obstacles that seemed impossible before. Kardec gave so much importance to the act of thinking that one day he wrote in the book “Genesis”: “Thought produces a type of physical effect that reacts over the moral: and it is only that the Spiritism could make understand”. (9)

It is the thought that gives healing quality to the fluids, which exist in natural state around us. It is what transforms inert fluid in energy capable of recomposing a sick tissue or reducing the hazards of spiritual nature that affect individuals.

It is also thought the thread that allows us to establish a positive relationship with the spirits that participate in the healing activities. But, at the same time that it allows us all this, it may also connect us to spirits whose presence will be harmful to the act of healing. Every coin has two sides, the laws of the nature are two-way roads. The mind is a source of healing or destructive energy.

Incorporation of solid particles by one cell through the involvment of those by it. (That process does not implicate penetration of the cellular membrane and serves to nutrition and defense against foreign elements to the organism)
